Google yesterday announced the launch of Consumer Surveys, a new service from Google that will allow organisations to create polls to measure the success of different products, services and other ideas.
Businesses can create fully customisable surveys and collect results for just a few cents (0.10) per response. The surveys are deployed from multiple Google affiliate publishers. My take on this is that if and when this becomes available for any website to run a survey on (including www.proptechnow.com.au) then this SaaS will become a massive success. However for now you will have to create targeted surveys across the web from approved Google Publishers.

Thanks Peter. Interesting. The only problem is you can’t guarantee the people responding, fit your criteria. The ones who receive the questions are not targeted by keywords on a profile like say Facebook PPC… I’m wondering how they will decide who to show the survey to- based on what criteria? They did say gender and location. That’s too broad.. Seems like it will be quite random.

Hi Lisa
Yes, it is a start, but I dont like the publisher network, I think people should be able to create surveys and embed them onto their own websites. This way it is more about them than Google

I guess they are trying to market to people who want to ask very general questions to the very general population. If you do have a list/data base or traffic to your website, you would be better off using a tool called ‘survey monkey’ . Until they start collecting more targeted information, i can only see it being very generalized. Maybe it will pull the keywords from google plus… That would make more sense? Interesting anyway.

Not applicable in Australia yet. The people filling out the surveys are US only.

Oh, I forgot to mention that, thanks Nick!

Seems all a bit vague. Lisa is right, you can target a survey to exactly whom you want with Survey Monkey ( which has now combined with Zoomerang) Just looking back, the first survey we did with Zoomerang was back in 2005. The response rate will always be low, however it depends on the subject, and how you ask the questions. Ask easy, non-specific ones first, and then get to the point. We sent surveys to tenants, property owners, vendors and potential buyers.
It wasn’t earth shattering research, but it turned up a few points that we weren’t aware of, I remember.

The difference between say Survey Monkey and Google’s surveys is that with Survey Moneky you are only targetting those people you have got to visit your website or you know an email address for. They are already biased they visited your website and therefore the results are not really that independent. With Google’s surveys they know enough about people for you to target specific demographics but essentially it is probably as random as you could make it. Some of the people would have probably never have heard of your company before..
Seems it was tailor made for political parties and media companies to run political polls. 🙂

Very true, however if Google gave you the ability to embed, then theoretically you could have your survey on any website.

Tried this out the other week (I’ve been waiting for ages for google to appear in this space, so I was excited to see it)
Have to say I was completely underwhelmed by most of it. the concept really interesting on the surface but I found the execution rigid, and very limited.
Glenn – I think you are spot on – great for a general population straw polls – and with a US presidential election just around the corner seems like a good fit for every news outlet in the US to conduct quick and simple polling on any topic they can think of, while creating yet another way for google to monitise their audience.
Peter to you point regarding embedding – google want you to buy their completes – makes little sense that they would allow you to embed surveys on your site.
It’s a shame – I had higher expectations of this… maybe it will improve as it evolves – I guess that will depend on demand/use.
