Have you been Slapped by the Panda ?

2 minute read

Whats he talking about being slapped by the panda ? The big G or Google runs a very complex algorithm which uses artificial intelligence in such a sophisticated manner, no humans outside of Google really know how it works. This algorithm update is called a panda update, the most recent update being 3.3 which took place on the 27th of February and included the discontinuation of a link evaluation signal.

In todays SEO world we all use calculated guesses and practice optimisation techniques based on the SERP  we achieve through many different link building methods, ie blog posts, forum posts, article marketing web 2.0 profiles etc. as mentioned no one actually knows exactly how google will rank a site. This most recent update had really taken some of our industries players for a rough ride as some results have been dropped by 5-7 rankings overnight. Which could indicate a case of “too many eggs in one basket” as SEO is about diversification. It’s important to diversify so that when certain ranking factors are updated by google it does not throw your site around the search results. Don’t get slapped by the panda !

I noticed a certain website was completely shut down overnight as a result of google deindexing 98% of its blog network. This was a subscription network with literally thousands of members paying $50 + pm ! It just goes to show you how powerful these guys are and that there is no point trying to “trick” Google as there intelligence will catch up with you soon enough.

This most recent update seems to be aimed at providing consumers a more accurate local results and tends to be showing more local businesses, a good thing for small business however can knock around some of the bigger guys.

Panda first arrived in February 2011. Since then they have applied small updates to pick up any websites they deemed should have been picked up but didnt.

There has been two updates this year already, both pretty minor unless your site was picked up for the first time.

The one big difference about the new Panda change is that it relates to the whole site rather than just individual pages. If you have a bunch of pages that are copied from another site, then your whole site can be penalised.

This means that templated sites for real estate groups that all have many pages the same all risk getting panda slapped. If you have tons of corporate generated text you need to spin it so that it is unique. Prior to Panda those pages would just not be ranked but now they can effect the raking of your whole site.

Ok so could a site that perhaps carried the ATDW http://www.atdw.com.au/
content get slapped hard, as 600 other sites carry it also ?
Yes you can put some unique pages in there somewhere but the listings are the same you cant change them and there sould be 20,000 of them………..just thinking out loud here.

If your providing the original content i cant see that you would get “slapped”.

Whilst content is king its not the only factor looked at.

My thoughts on those that got slapped were more so directed at some of the black hat techniques employed by some of our industries players. Its good to see the the “tricks” actually dont work in the long run.

Ive ranked some sites overnight on the 1st page of Google using both black hat and white hat techniques and the only ones that have ever stood the test of time were the sites that have had constant quality backlinks.

Watch http://www.listabusiness.com.au .. whilst competing with Manish and Peter Watson who have been in the industry 5-6 + years, i am now ranked on the first page with them after 12 months. With a little help of course 😛 just no tricks

    Hi Nicholas

Very certain you are taking abt BMR and True Google have the ultimate Power.
Not only BMR but many other networks like kyle and others got deindexed. Google is certainly making their intentions clear.

    I have a quick question

I know business trader use to be Number 1 for 3 years for “business for sale” keyword, after this panda update got dropped to 5 to 7 Ranks. But not for all keywords, He still holds good rank in some other keywords. like “business loan” rank 5 that is steady since last 2 years.

If he was penalised, he should have been penalised for the whole website, according to this update.
May be that means for a keyword what ever network you have used and if that is not white hat, you lose the ranking.

what are your thoughts on this ?

    Great Article, keep posting.

With everything I’ve studied about the new changes, I’m really excited about Googles new take on things. It’s going to make it harder for the ones that try and cheat the system or have over compensated in Seo. And a lot of the time that’s the big boys who have seemed to have won in the past.

Take Realestate.com who since googles last big change, enjoyed 3 spots on page one for every single suburb in Australia. Pushing the local businesses down.

Genuine Local businesses would seem to have to win now with the changes as long as they do what Google are saying they want.

-Making more genuine links, traces and links back to real people throughout social media. (google plus a big one)
-Totally fresh (not spun) key worded relevant content,
-Fresh relevant videos (and we know the videos are also being transcribed through YouTube) so key wording videos is also important
    – Deep links through your own site.

Can’t wait to see how it all plays out anyway, especially with Google integrating everything. Exciting times in SEO.

Do you think they have been slapped by Panda or was it always going to happen? Propertynow has little content compared to the others above it in the rankings and has hundreds of links that may or may not be seen as “Good friends” by google.

IMHO- Kiss principle applies. Be genuine about two things in SEO

    – content to match what you claim to be: and

    – have quality friends (links) that relate to who you are and what you do. “Google judges you by the friends you keep”.

Not to mention usibility, panda also checks ad placements and things like content above the fold.

IMO searching inside the Google bubble isn’t always a great thing.. previously if I wanted to search for something specific, the SEPRS would reflect keyword rich sites, which 9 times out of 10 would contain my answer.

However since the introduction of panda, most of these sites are WAY down the SERPS, instead giving me useless results based on location and the things panda likes to eat.. etc…

      Over to Bing for now.

Yep. All of the blog networks got hit hard, but to be honest it was only a matter of time. I have seen so many of these networks coming up and pretty much falling hard throughout the years.

Even though they call themselves private networks, they are still open to the public for the cost of a subscription.

The real private networks are much more expensive and are what the big dogs use!

These Panda updates have had a huge impact on our business. We have had our website for over 11 years and in all that time of SEO work and money spent, a lot of it has gone out of the window. Seeing smaller, younge, less established, and american based websites ranking higher then ours… Is frustrating! We used a short URL because 11 years ago that was the “in thing”. Longer websites wouldnt get read – but today anything with the keywords in the URL seem to outrank us. We were established back when “ebay” and the 4 letter URL’s were favoured. Now we cant seem to get get back up there because our website doesnt contain keywords: bsale.com.au

I regards to listabusiness.com.au it surprises me the ranking results it achieves. This website is only 2-3 years old and yet out ranks sites with 3x the content and 5x the age. I think Google still has a long way to go in perfecting its algorithms.

@Manish – Business2Sell has come up rather quickly since the Panda update. http://www.bsale.com.au ranked in the top 3 for “business for sale” for over 6 years. Google changed algorithms now were fighting to stay on the first page. Yet we dont use XML feeds and all our listings are manually entered. I see you have over 6,000 listings – I imagine a lot of these are duplicated to other sites – so interesting you stay at top 3. I also know a lot of the brokerages you have, use duplicate ads for the same business (e.g. advertising a cafe twice but using different wording).

Rankings change often and we have seen many websites come in top 3 and drop – right now were the website that is dropping and will fight to get back up there.

Yes, you run a real risk of effecting your whole site by carrying these sort of articles.

Some reasons why you might get away with it though..

1/ Panda is not about shooting down syndicated content, it is about reducing low quality sites. Panda’s original release caused some syndicated content to appear much higher than the original site. Further releases changed this though. It just so happens that many low quality sites carry syndicated content… so if your site still ranks well for other criteria then you may get away with it. Think of syndicated content as a big flag.. but you dont have any other flags then you might be ok and never trigger a slap..

I think if visitors stayed on those pages and after visiting the page and did not hit back out to revisit the SERP page to reselect another result you might be ok. Have you noticed that if yo do that.. Google detects it these days and now offers to “block” all results from that domain.. I reckon this feature has Panda written all over it.

2/ It is quite possible that Google has built in indicators in their algorithm to allow for content that is suppose to be syndicated. The problem is really with copied or scraped content, not with content that is meant to be scraped. Some content is all about being syndicated such as news, property classifieds, weather etc etc..

Despite this, I think it will be a risk you need to manage when you play with syndicated content until it is a bit clearer just what triggers a slap!

It’s not articles it’s listings of accommodation property which Google would see as the same thing I guess.

I will place the ATDW content on a new web site just in case…… if I decide to do it at all.

I’ve been aware that Google tracks clicks on search results and I’ve always thought that backing out of a web site miadverselyesly affect it.

I’ve also thought that repeatedly searching for your site and clicking on it actually helps it, though thats just my theory.

Agents with their own listings mirrored from the majors would then also be penalised but many agents don’t really worry about that as their main exposure is via the majors anyway.

Panda is the least of webmasters concerns at this point. The new ‘over optimisations’ penalty which is on its way is certainly going to ‘rock the boat’! Once again, the cream will rise to the top, while other sites who have used questionable techniques have experienced short term gain (1-2 years) are about to experience long term pain.

    Watch this space!

      Posted April 12, 2012 at 9:44 am 0Likes

Panda effected 12% of website rankings. That is big enough to be concerned about. Saying that, for existing if you are going to be effected by this then you probably already have been.

As to a possible upcoming algorthim changes by Google. ….. I don’t think they ever release details on changes before they happen and even when they do notify of a change post-rollout it is always very broad. Are you sure you are not talking about speculation of upcoming changes rather than fact ?

    Peter Watson,

I’m not sure what you are referring to when you talk about “over optimization”. Can you elaborate on examples of over optimized portals who would be penalized. Are you simply talking about black hat techniques? All the major portals optomize to the enth dgree.

    Glenn Rogers,

I wouldn’t be too concerned about ATDW listings. Most of REA and Domain listings come in a similar manner via syndication through portal pushers.I’d find it difficult to see why Panda would penalize for legitimately procured content.

  • Glenn Rogers
    Posted April 12, 2012 at 8:55 am 0Likes

Yes Peter Watson, more detail please.

Vic – keeping it in a separate web site would be safer, it’s unnerving that Google controls the destiny and income of so many people. Hope REA don’t buy them out one day 🙂

Glenn, a risk yes but if google is not going to penalize, wouldn’t it be better for you to have all on the one site?

However, having said this we are currently looking into this aspect to manage our own risk.

Glenn, that’s a great domain name, but isn’t it just pointing to http://www.weekend.com.au, the same way as our http://wwww.watersideholidays.com.au, is pointing to our main site. All the listings are on our main site with the option of going to the dedicated holiday site at some time in future for an exit strategy.

What we are hoping for is leveraging off our existing traffic for the main site, for the holiday section. Wouldn’t you be better off doing similar if the Panda risk could be mitigated? Just curious.

Over optimisation – “people who sort of abuse it whether they throw too many keywords on the page, or whether they exchange way too many links, or whatever they’re doing to sort of go beyond what a normal person would expect in a particular area.”

Google will need to be careful here as Peter Said it will “rock the boat” its just how much.

      Glenn R,

Slightly off topic but here is some quick thoughts. 🙂

The hard part would be to decide what to do with that domain.. so many options.. Assuming you dont want to invest a lot of time I would suggest something like a directory using simple software like wordpress..

It is fairly simple to setup and once it is up and running it pretty well looks after itself.

I run a directory for real estate software and online solutions at http://www.australianrealestatesoftware.com

Mine is not for profit and is a very small niche but you could use the same solution to build a business directory on the domain. The wordpress theme is called directorypress. http://directorypress.net/

Run some adsense on the pages.. not too many spots.. Set it up as a targetted channel so advertisers can specifically target your website as well.

You can make it free for basic listing and sell different listing packages based on one off or recurring payments.. monthly or yearly. The submission process including payments can be fully automated. I dont use the payments as the website is totally free.

If you want you could create different niche directories under subdomains.

realestate.sydneyaustralia.com.au for a directory of real estate agents
tourism.sydneyaustralia.com.au for a directory of tourist sights.

You would need to seed each directory with a number of listings. It will import listings from DMOZ to save time but you would want to give each listing a bit more love to get it unique and better results seo wise.

For a years hosting and the cost of the theme you will get a fair bit of change from $200.

Stick with one of the basic themes like I have to minimise your time … but as your traffic starts increasing you can trick it up with a custom theme…

Thanks for the input Glen B I was thinking of starting a new site using ATDW content for Sydney only, then adding Adsence, and the ability of the ATDW content to upgrade to Premium for a fee.

Expensive to set up but should be easy to maintain then incorporate it with Weekend somehow.

I will do something with it and soon.

I’ve got no idea what WordPress is I’ve always thrown the whole thing at programmers but they’re not easy to find these days….good ones that is.

Happy to profit share if there’s enough in it.

Geez that Directory Press thing is awesome, I was thinking of spending about $20k on a custom site, that would have much the same features.

Not sure if I can get my head around how the whole thing works and I would need to customize the look not sure if it allows you to do that outside it’s templates, but a great product by the look of it.

        • Glenn Batten
          Posted April 13, 2012 at 7:56 am 0Likes

you can change the templates but honestly in the beginning I would concentrate only on adding seed listings to start generating you traffic. Once you get the concept working then bother about customising the template.

The templates will allow you to tweak the look with colours and logos but eventually you will want to have a fully custom look.

Directorypress is not perfect but it is a lot cheaper than your $20k build!!!

Just bought it , now the confusion starts, if you want to be involved in some way Glenn just yell out, after all you were the final push to get me moving on this.

To get really good content I think I would have to go to ATDW and I dont think that can be integratred into this program but it will be good to play around with it for starters.

          • Glenn Batten
            Posted April 13, 2012 at 11:08 am 0Likes

Have not got the time to throw at it at the moment but more than happy to give you an tips with the theme that from my experience but I dont need to be involved.. Thanks anyway.. I will take a link back from your site to one of mine ( http://www.importusa.com.au ) when it is up and running as thanks for the push along though 🙂

Its pretty easy to work with it.

The decisions you make now set the flexibility and direction you can take later.

First decision you need to make is what you want a directory of. do you want a bunch of smaller niche directorys… or a large broad business directory or just one small niche directory.

If you want the first then you will need wordpress installed in multisite mode so you can setup fresh installs for each subdirectory. If you want the other two. then just a normal install of wordpress will do.

My suggestion to maximise the domain is setup a normal install of wordpress on the root of the domain which introduces the different directories. Then setup one or two niche directories on subdomains. This allows you to expand the concept of it is successful to more niche directories.. ie.. real estate agent directory etc etc. The problem if you select just one niche now is that to upgrade it becomes more difficult.

On top of directory listings you can have articles.

The good thing is that with a thoughtout and simple permalink structure you can change over to a full custom build at a later date without dropping any pages and copping an seo penalty if it outgrows the directorypress model.

I believe directorypress will import by csv which would make bulk importing much easier but it is not something i have used.. I have tested the dmoz import though. We probably have pushed the off topic conversation too far on here now so feel free to email me at [email protected] with any questions.

More than happy to give you a peek at the back end of http://www.australianrealestatesoftware.com if you think it might help you. I hardly push it to its limits but it might give you a kick start.

Well we can’t do that here, we could have just taken it to email but we didnt seem to be interupting anyone as the topic had run it’s course, do agree it’s not really appropriate, (says he as we carry on further) Ha

So I couldn’t help but notice a paragraph of content at Business2Sell.com.au today:

“Our Competitors cannot beat us in our industry, Our Rates are 10 times cheaper and our Rankings are #1 in Australia now, so they use this dirty tactics to make us look bad and do false advertising on our behalf.”

Manish, you can not be serious, or?

You shot to the top just as fast as you have fallen down. It’s the ‘fly by night’ cowboys like you that ruin our industry!

I can not believe you are boasting about being 10 X cheaper! Way to go dragging the entire industry down! You sound like a very savvy business person, NOT!

Google has seen through your questionable tactic and just in the nick of time before you DEFLATE our industry!

Peter, I am not sure why you have to put personal remarks, I am not going to go as low.

We all are having a conversation in a civilised manner.

I have a separate business model then yours, I do not tell anyone how to do your business, please stop tell me how to do mine.

Actually Peter, Fly By Night cowboys make the industry, why? Because the ones that provide deep customer service, have great relationships end up being in the industry and trusted over the years survive and thrive 🙂

I don’t mean to sound aggressive, but I think I speak on behalf of all business owners from all industries when I highlight people who come in at 10 X cheaper the the next guy. I mean seriously, we are trying to earn a living here.

Manish, there is some merit it what Peter has voiced today.

Its not a good thing to deflate the industry like that, i mean were all in competition together here and i would consider the top three to be keeping things relatively healthy bsale, business trader & listabusiness.

Id also love to know who you refer to when you say “they use dirty tactics to make us look bad and do false advertising on our behalf”

Please let us know or point us in the direction of where this has been done in the past.

We are not the ones with 7000 + backlinks only 5000 more than the rest of us.. I think you have now sent off some alarm bells..

I dont wish any bad apon you at all and hope you can stay up there as “healthy” competition.. This recent ranking drop in the last 24 hrs may only be a dance we dont know so im not going to make a judgment..

Hopefully if things can be cleaned up we will start to see some honest results.

Might be worth some of us higher ranking guys looking at a jv or merge to form a network of highly ranked sites which is something the bigger players simply could not throw the money at to do themselves.

Their corporate, sales people, order takers & have little to no experience when it comes to true online marketing.

      Hi Nicholas

Peter is referring to the article On our website, a issue we had with ab4s

      http://blog.business2sell.com.au/2012/04/misleading-advertising-emails/

AB4S is being using a old email we send 6 years ago to business brokers telling them we are doing false advertising. We have send them a Legal Notice, hoping this will be stopped.

AB4S is misleading and sending email to other which was not true, We never told any body anything wrong about our competitors, but what AB4S was doing is unethical.

      Regarding the Price Issue

When I came to the market there was only 2 or 3 sites, But in matter of 6 months there were 10 other websites came into industry. Everyone offering free trials for 6 months and 1 year etc. Only hand full of those sites survived, domain names like businessales.com.au are unable to hit the first page.

So I had to Offer for Free and later to convert from Free to a paid website wasn’t an easy transition.I am a Programmer not a sales guy. I had to keep the rates low to compete.I did what I had to do to survive.

It is false that I have bring prices down, Seekcommercial and RealCommercial have just increased their rates again. Neither Trader or Bsale have dropped the rates commercialview and realestateguide are charging around $300 / year too… why dont blame them to bringing market down.

@Peter : You hold the top spot for very long, that is your advantage and that’s why brokers pay you what you ask for. In result you have less listings and less brokers and the growth is limited.

When my site is not raking in first page my rates have to be cheaper, when I reach higher… I charge higher. Everyone have their strength, Big Guys have Money, Peter have SEO, I have Cheap development. I am also trying to earn a living and trying to be competitive.

I think you may find that businessview.com.au is charging more than $300 per year..

The generaly package is about $165 per month and includes the ability to use there network of sites .

And your site outranks both of those guys. There is no business in 300 pa. its simply not enough to market.. 50 brokers is 15k a year ? Really ? 15k dont go far if your serious about getting results! whats your thoughts ?

Interesting thought re the merge. I don’t have much knowledge in this area and to be honest, it always baffled me when I see websites promoting:

‘List with us and we will place your listing on our competitor sites….lol!

Imagine we joinded forces and turned into a mega network! Or even better, agree on the same fees. Driving the fees up makes business sense. If we control the market, then this is what we should be uniting on.

Not sure, maybe too many grey areas………..

Ever heard of the ACCC ?

  • Peter Watson
    Posted April 13, 2012 at 3:54 pm 0Likes

It was said tongue in cheek. This would never happen. And I would be very surprised if the ACCC would be interested in such a pissy little niche. We would need to get every single website in our niche on board. Good point though.

    Nick, regarding your quote here:

“This recent ranking drop in the last 24 hrs may only be a dance we dont know so im not going to make a judgment”,

I can assure you it is not a fluctuation.

Mines been dancing now for a while, I get a different result on different computers and sometimes different browsers.

I think all but the largest sites act in this way, Googles servers do not serve up exactly the same result, depends where you are and the time of day perhaps.

Fluctuations are totally normal. I predicted this would happen to this site ealier in this thread, and then today it did! This is not a flux.

Directory Press – what a nightmare, 60 seconds to create a web site with 2 years training first !

Doesnt display properly in IE8 and I’m not sure it ever will, use another browser ? try telling that to the 48% who use IE

Anyway life goes on http://www.weekendrealestate.com.au UNDER CONSTRUCTION 🙂

OK Glenn, I’ll bite. Is this site taking over from your existing holiday site and why a domain name that doesn’t easily reflect your site’s aim ?

        Posted April 18, 2012 at 4:27 pm 0Likes

        Hi Vic,

Just saw your post now, no it’s not taking over from my existing site just a parallel supporting thing that will carry the premium listings, an experiment really.

I thought the domain name wasnt bad, we have real estate and it’s holiday and weekend real estate ??? Good enough ?

BTW I was advised today to convert my exisitng site to WordPress, I thought WordPress was for small sites only. It doesnt work in IE8 either, I have to wait about 15 seconds for B2 to load, cant change browsers as most people still use IE8

Love it – 30% of people still use IE8, the other 70% spread over the rest, but IE8 is the most popular, theres the problem if you run a web site.
