Seattle based Internet marketing firm SEOMoz launched its new Trifecta tool this week. This tool tries to measure the importance of a website, it collates a number of factors including Google Page Rank, incoming links, news articles and traffic sources – such as Alexa.
It is a pretty rough guide, but in principal it should work reasonable well. Many companies want this space, because with it comes advertisers….and they pay. Google, Yahoo and MSN are all getting in on the act as well.
This survey is all about real estate, and what they have tried to do is put together a big list of all of the major players in the market, you can read it here, however a list is provided below. Australia’s own Realestate.com.au is actually ranked number 4, which is pretty impressive.

Soon to be bigger than Zillow

Maybe in a few years Craig. You will need at least a page rank of 1 (not zero) to have a chance! 🙂

Peter do you know if there is a big player out of this list in the Commercial Real Estate sector or would RealCommercial come under the realestate.com.au banner too?
Wow! One can only imagine the difference in advertising rates based on the rankings of number 1 & number 50 on this list.
PS. I hope it kicks butt Craig 🙂

Peter,
Don’t realestate.com.au (REA) own the number 5 on the list which is Propertyfinder.com?
If so how come Right Move which are the number 1 site in the UK rank below them as Propertyfinder is number 2 over there.
Am I missing something with the way these sites are measured?
Peter Ricci
Yes, but if you look how they are rated, its is all about strengths of partnerships. This does not reflect which is the most popular, by visitor numbers or page views. It is a very broad type measurement.
Sian
Peter,
I hope you don

Thanks Sian, it wouldn’t surprise me if there were more, a pain in the *&^%side doing each every one of them!

GlobalEdge didn’t put the ‘top 50 property websites’ into the trifecta tool, they just picked ’50 property websites’ that they assumed were the biggest, if that makes sense.
They’ve left out biggies like move.com, homegain.com (both among top 5 US property websites by users) and of course, domain.com.au 🙂
When the trifecta tool is working for me (seems to be down at the moment), I’ll run the stats for domain and some of other Aussie property sites…
Disclosure: I’m one of the bloggers at SEOmoz (username: shor) and I also moonlight at Fairfax Digital (or is it the otherway around?)

Good point Lucas, it seems it is a little flimsy and I am sure others have missed out.

http://www.domain.com.au has a domain strength of 60% (would have ranked 8th in the top 50 list)
http://www.myhome.com.au = 37%
http://www.homehound.com.au = 33%
http://www.raywhite.com.au = 23%
http://www.realestateview.com.au = 38%
Above 30% would have ranked you in the top 30 so in other words, most big Aussie property sites would have ranked in most ‘powerful’ 50.
The article writer used a nice hook, too bad his/her content is fluff.

@ Lucas NG/Shor re. Global Edge’s top overseas sites:
Global Edge are a UK-based company and they seem to see things from the perspective of a UK estate agent wanting to do well overseas, whether or not that is their actual intention.
Their top sites report was based on Search Engine rankings for a selection of overseas-based keywords so it’s understandable that they miss out US and Australian sites. Given that Google is the UK’s most used engine, the average joe in the UK will be querying its UK/European datacentres and will get results weighted towards their geographical location even if they use ‘rest of the web option’ but you blog for SEO Moz so I’m sure you know all about this and far more than I.
