Just wanted to send out a warm congratulations to Property Guru for winning the Google Mash ups Award at the Australian Developer Day held by Google. It is great to see local developers working hard – sometimes out of hours to create new and exciting products.
Google has been successful with these types of things over the past few years because they have given the tools for developers to make their products and services better. A close relationship with developers in my opinion is the key for large media organisations in Australia and one that they have fallen well short of in the past. Maybe it is too late for them to win developers back, but we live in a different world to the one they are accustomed to. Fairfax now seems to be getting on board but only time will tell if they allow this to spread to their major online products.
You can view Property Guru here and also view a long but pretty important video of the Google Developer Day Speech here. Google is encouraging local developers to work with Google and their API’s to develop solutions for businesses.

Good on them
Guess they are showing the big boys where they should aready be.
Shame their model is not viable long term, due to inability to find 3.5m ubs every month.

Unique browser session?

What is ubs?

If that is the case I don’t see why propertyguru cant survive with considerable less than 3.5m visitors a month. Their business model is completely different to realestate.com.au so it’s apples and oranges really.

Surely any Internet online advertising based model is based on traffic generated by unique browsers?
So assume an avg cpm of say 10.00 nett of commssions and a few bucks from google ads.
They would need prob at least 500k users a month to make 10k a month revenue.
A good web developer makes that now?

E,
Without sounding too blase I would suggest that we should expect to see these results from the property portals. Afterall, this is about delivering better results to their clients and if they cease to grow their business model is then doomed to failure with significant market share losses.
Congratulations to Fairfax Digital. Not that I have ever doubted their capabilities in the first instance. They are obviously in Google terms tracking in the right direction.
