My Home TV aired this morning for the first time at 10.00am in all major Australian Capitals except Hobart – which they may have forgotten is connected to Australia.
The presentation was slick and the show had some interesting features.
The Bad:
Does commercial TV normally have this many advertisement breaks?
Some claims such as go to MyHome to see “all the available properties in Australia” was pretty funny and completely false.
Most of the show features were paid for content.
The Good:
Some useful tips and advice for property buyers.
A good renovation feature that took a pretty normal suburban home and gave it a great makeover for less than $5000.
Advice:
Get some listings on the site, get the extra feature pages cleaned up – they look and feel terrible….
All in all: Once MyHome fixes its site problems and gets 50+% of listings (and they will) then moves this to a better timeslot this is going to worry the real estate portals. It is just so much more powerful than print or radio (does anyone advertise on radio any more?). The presenters are excellent – keep them all – and add more content for the home buyer….
It also seems that they are localising content for each state which is a fantastic idea. This show will drive agents to MyHome.

Peter,
Not sure that I have such a rosie view of the myhome tv show as you.
The first thing which sticks in my mind is the sixty second property profiles, which directed the viewer to the myhome website, rather than the agents website. With all other mediums we have at our disposal, we have the opportunity to drive people to our sites eg: Portals, Print and Radio. This concerns me just a little, as from what has been said on here, agents have to pay to put their listing on tv, and the end benefit is the pbl website.
Sure they put your phone number and name up there, but you would need to have a pen and paper ready, and write fast.
I remember predicting last year that all PBL would introduce are new products and new fees, and the tv show this morning just proves that.
As a show, the target audience (that would be the teenagers who were flipping channels) really would have to be someone who has absolutely no idea about the property market.
It really is just an infomercial format like the Your Business Success on sunday morning.
Presenters? well it just did not gel with me. Granted it is early days, but if they want agents to pay for it, the presentation needs to be top class from the first episode.
I agree with you, once they get their act together for both the site and the tv show, then it will drive people from tv to online.
But it will only be to the website, not the agents website.
Tell me I am crazy, but are we really looking at an agent subsidised tv promotion of a pbl website? How can I track this cost and apply it to potential purchasers, and explain it to my vendors.
Peter can you find out just how much it costs to put a listing on this show?
At the moment, all i am seeing is just new ways of making money out of my listings.

Peter, I think you’re right that what really matters is listings. Myhome will never succeed without them–no matter how much money they spend on TV, radio, skywriting or whatever.
The other thing that struck me is that the TV show is extremely expensive for the number of people it will reach. The last real estate TV show that ran on PBL’s network had just 11,000 viewers. That’s right, 11,000. That kind of number won’t drive much web traffic, or many leads for agents.
(CSI, by contrast, had more than 1.6 million.)
PBL would be better off investing their TV money into affordable online advertising. In fact, I happen to know an affordable way for them to reach 3.7 million unique browsers who are home hunting. They can advertise on realestate.com.au!
(Sorry, I couldn’t resist.)

Just for clarity – we would not accept ads for myhome on realestate.com.au. Just as domain would not accept ads for realestate.com.au on their site.
